UU Master student applying Oiconomy to the Dutch wheat industry
Jeroen Doornink is a student of the Sustainable Business and Innovation master program of Utrecht University. He has started work on his master thesis, aiming to determine the Oiconomy price of Dutch-grown wheat. Wheat is a staple of global food systems and is responsible for a considerable amount of protein and calories consumed worldwide by people and livestock. As the Netherlands is struggling to balance its carbon and nitrogen emissions, studies into the externalities of the agricultural sector are an important step to a sustainable future.
Under the supervision of Dr. Arturo Castillo Castillo the study will use the Oiconomy method to shed light on the preventative costs associated with these externalities and what can be done to future-proof our agricultural sector. Along with these insights the analysis of wheat with Oiconomy aids possible future research into the preventative costs associated with foods and feedstocks, helping to expand the application of the Oiconomy method.
